SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE, LOS MINA

In 1982 the SOS Association purchased land in the Los Mina area, and in 1984 the SOS Children’s Village, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner Kindergarten and Primary School, and the SOS Hermann Gmeiner Medical Center were inaugurated. This village has 17 family houses with 160 children.

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE, SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS

The Dominican SOS Children’s Villages began the construction of a third SOS Village in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros in September 2002. This Village will have 15 family houses with capacity to house 150 children, and will have a multiuse hall, and an SOS Kindergarten and Primary School for 400 students and an administrative building.

SOS YOUTH HOUSES

The Dominican SOS Children’s Villages have four Youth Houses, located in different areas of the city of Santo Domingo: Ensanche La Fe, Costa Criolla, Alma Rosa I, Alma Rosa II
Two houses are for boys and two for girls. Each house has an Educator who is responsible for the good functioning of the household and supervises the youth in residence. Between the four houses there is capacity to board 50 youth.

SOS HERMANN GMEINER KINDERGARTEN AND PRIMARY SCHOOL

The SOS Hermann Gmeiner Kindergarten and Primary School, has capacity for 425 students from both SOS Children’s Villages and the neighbouring children from Los Mina. The children from the SOS Village of Los Jardines are transported daily and the distance between both villages is approximately 10 kilometers. The School has double shifts, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It has 3 kindergarten classroom and 9 primary classrooms, a multiuse hall, sports areas, computer classroom, and classrooms for languages, sewing, arte, handicrafts, beautician and a dining room/kitchen. The children receive a daily free snack. The teachers who teach at our school are highly qualified so as to assure that our children receive the best academic foundation in order to continue their studies. The students’ academic level is very good, and when the finish the primary education they can be admitted in the best high schools in the city.

SOS HERMANN GMEINER MEDICAL CENTER

The SOS Medical Center is located in the Los Mina SOS Children’s Village, and it has three consulting rooms, and an odontologist room, laboratory, drug store and emergency room, a vaccination room and a conference hall. Four doctors give service in pediatrics, gynecology, general medicine, and once a month in ophthalmology as well as two dentists. The Los Mina area is very poor and overcrowded with families of little economic resources, making our medical center very important for the health of these inhabitants. Our medical consultations are offered at a very low cost, and the drugstore sells medication at only 10% over the original price. An average of 28,900 check-ups are performed annually. Doctors also give medical guidance lectures to the students of the SOS School and the neighbouring community members.
